Clinical Governance

The practice endeavours to provide the highest quality treatment and care it can to its patients ensuring at all times that it works with the most up to date clinical information and current best practice guidelines.

Education and Training

All staff both clinical and non clinical take part in an annual appraisal system which links into their personal development programme. Doctors and nurses are obliged professionally to maintain their continuing professional development to ensure their clinical skills are as up to date as possible. Every month the practice closes for 3 hours to allow all staff to take part in protected learning. Please click here for 2009/10 protected time dates

The types of training staff take part in at the protected learning sessions are updates such as basic life support, health and safety, appraisal skills, team building and information governance. These half days also give us the opportunity to review departmental policies and procedures, to examine critical incidents that may have happened over the last few months and to review the feedback from the annual patient survey in order to implement any changes that may be necessary from that.

This year some of our nurses will attend further training in clinical areas such as the new trends in treatment and care of patients undergoing the menopause, a diploma in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, up dates in travel and childhood immunisation, and care of the diabetic patient.

The doctors regularly attend a variety of clinical treatment updates, GP registrar training sessions, and resuscitation training days.

Clinical Effectiveness

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) is the independent organisation which is responsible for providing national guidance on the promotion of good health and the prevention and treatment of ill health. It produces guidance in three areas of health public health - guidance on the promotion of good health and the prevention of ill health for those working in the NHS, local authorities and the wider public and voluntary sector, health technologies - guidance on the use of new and existing medicines, treatments and procedures within the NHS and clinical practice - guidance on the appropriate treatment and care of people with specific diseases and conditions within the NHS.

Health and Safety

We have a robust framework for ensuring we are adhering to Health and Safety legislation within the practice both for staff working in the environment of the surgery as well as to prevent harm to you when you attend the surgery.

We have a health and safety consultant who advises us on health and safety and who has helped us develop our risk management systems supported by Nicki Brummitt our health and safety lead who along with Dr David Low and Beverley Cole (Practice Manager) try to ensure a safe environment for staff and patients using the service.
